Haiti Travel Blog > Haiti Airports > Toussaint Louverture International Airport Toussaint Louverture International Airport Is The Main Haiti International Airport And Haiti's Gateway To The World Toussaint Louverture International Airport is an international airport located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Haiti's main International airports was not always known as the Toussaint Louverture International Airport.
Developed with grant money from the American government, the airport opened in 1965 as Francois Duvalier International Airport, named after Haitian president Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier (1957-1971).
Following the resignation of Duvalier's son and successor Jean Claude Duvalier in 1986, the airport was renamed Port-au-Prince International, I used to hear it called Airport Mais Gate.
In 2003 they renamed it Toussaint L'Overture International Airport, Let us hope they stop screwing with the name of the airport from now on!

Florence Flon's comment about "Toussaint Louverture International Airport"
Re: Toussaint Louverture International Airport First of all; i t should be noted that the name of our Airport should remain Aeoport Francois Duvalier. The author of this article should also research Haitian history to get the facts that this airport was built by the haitian people with haitian money and resources. Whatever grant you are reffering to does not exist. Haiti's Aeoport Francois Duvalier was built with donations from every sector of Haitian society at the time. From merchants to school children they saw it as their civic duty to help built an airport. The goverment of Francois Duvalier built this airport with the aid of their people.
